First of all, if you have decided to raise chickens you have started on the road to save yourself a lot of money. For the relatively small initial investment, not only do you have an opportunity to experience animal husbandry first hand, but you are going to save a bunch of money not buying eggs, for one thing.

If you can refrain from naming your chickens, and treating them as pets, you will also save money from not having to buy chicken to eat anymore.

Anyone with simple skills can make a portable chicken coop. There are an abundance of plans, kits, and complete DIY projects that you can buy to help you make the best residence for your chickens, one that can rival your neighbor’s.

Chickens need just a few things to make them happy and healthy. A well made shelter to keep them warm and dry and out of the elements, food and water, and a place to scratch the ground.

First you will have to decide on your budget. While you can get building supplies cheaply, this is not always the way to go.

If you buy the right materials the first time, it will save you time and aggravation having to fix and repair your hen house all the time.

One of the first things you have to consider is that your chickens are going to be kept outside. Buy lumber that has been treated to prevent moisture and bugs from getting into the wood.

You will want to buy sturdy plywood for the roof, and some really well put together screen for the outside and chicken runs.

A mobile chicken coop can be a good idea, but it can be heavy.

To help you out when moving your pen around, buy some heavy duty wheels and attach them on one side of the unit. This way you can move it around by yourself if you have too.

One of the other things you need to consider is size. A chicken needs space, in the coop as well as in the run, and one of the most common space recommendations for chicken coops is about four square feet per chicken.

If you feel this is going to be hard to handle and move around, consider building two units, that can be put together to form one. This way you can separate them easily and move them around without too much trouble.

You will want to build your coop using sturdy 2×4’s, and plan out your construction first. Use your instructions, and measure and cut all the pieces first.

Lay out the whole thing so it can be put together, this way you can see how the pieces will fit and make adjustments as necessary. When you are putting together your chicken coop, make sure that you give yourself a way to open up the coop to clean and collect eggs.
